How do you use the State feature during your RPG session?

state feature

Want to launch your first RPG session with Tome, but not quite sure what to do? Find out how to use the State feature to optimize your campaign follow-up during and after your first session.

So what is the State feature used for?

We've added a State feature to our storytelling software to help you keep track of your roleplaying session. As a game master, you've no doubt realized that the campaigns you prepare don't always go according to plan

If you're writing a non-linear scenario, you'll find it even harder to keep track of the scenes that have been played out. That's where the State feature comes in, allowing you to clarify the state of each scene and chapter.

The 4 state types

In order to separate the state of each page of your story in Tome, 4 types of state are available. A general overview of the states can be seen in the menu on the left. To change the state, all you have to do is click on the appropriate option in the top right-hand corner of the relevant page.

Not yet played

Each time a new scene is written, its state is considered Not yet played. This state is simply represented by a horizontal gray bar.

Played

Once players have completed a scene or chapter, you can set its stage to Played. In general, we recommend that you apply the Played option to each completed scene, and that you use this option for a chapter when it's closed and you don't want to come back to it.

Skipped

The Skipped state is particularly useful for non-linear scenarios, to indicate that players simply haven't completed this scene or even this chapter.

You can use it when you don't want players to attempt it because they've taken a different path, or because the scene is no longer relevant to their progress in the campaign

Other

We have added a final state called Other which allows each GM to customize the state of their chapters and scenes. Other can be used to bookmark a page, indicate where you left off after your last session, or any other state you find important!

Bonus: Using a Color Code

Since the 1.3 update of Tome, you also have the option to mark your pages with a color code. This feature can be used alongside states, allowing you to better visualize your pages and their states.

In our game master software, you have great freedom of customization, which truly allows you to apply your own tracking and writing rules.
